À propos

Located on the first floor of the Palais Rohan, it presents an exceptional panorama of the history of painting in Europe from the Middle Ages to around 1870, with virtually every school represented. Italian and Flemish Primitives (Giotto, Memling); Renaissance and Mannerism (Botticelli, Raphael, Veronese, Lucas de Leyden, El Greco); the golden age of Dutch painting, with de Hooch, Sweerts, De Witte, and the great names of Flemish painting, Rubens, Van Dyck and Jordaens; Baroque, Classicism and Naturalism in the 17th and 18th centuries, with works by Vouet, Champaigne, Ribera, Canaletto, Tiepolo and Goya; and finally Romanticism and Realism in the 19th century: paintings by Corot, Courbet, Chassériau and Henner, plus a fine collection of sculptures by Barye.

Another special feature of the museum is its unique collection of European still lifes: hunting trophies, sumptuous bouquets, meal reliefs, insect assemblages and striking Vanitas by Kalf, Huysum, Heda, Kessel, Bonnecroy, Linard and Chardin.

The museum's flagship painting, La Belle Strasbourgeoise, is by Nicolas de Largillière. This rare painting was acquired in 1963 thanks to a subscription from the people of Strasbourg!

The museum's permanent exhibition rooms, comprising twenty rooms and covering an area of 1,300m², present visitors with almost 300 paintings and around twenty sculptures. The museum reserves, open to the public on the first Saturday of each month, offer a further 140 paintings.
